The  appeal of breaking traditional rules of photography and freely experimenting with mediums outside of their intended purpose has been a key interest since we started syn_.

This diversion has led to define our style for the last years and enabled us to add another spectrum to our work. It allowed for more possibilities to play and explore.

Especially using stills from a film camera gave us an opportunity to capture spontaneous and very real moments, that happen in between the conscious awareness of the model. We chase these moments, where the acted character drops and you get a feeling for the human underneath. These moments are believable and real and give an extra layer to the work. At 24 frames per second, no conscious click and constant recording for minutes your chances to achieve these precious incidences multiply.

So far we have been playing with vintage cameras such as MiniDV camcorders as these are very intimate, emotional and trigger a nostalgic response in every viewer. Unfortunately, these extracted stills are too small to be considered as a substitute for a high-resolution photograph. A few months ago a new 6K cinematography camera was released and we developed a new workflow which finally gave us the possibilities we were looking for.

Today we can use this real crossover medium in our new projects. This workflow enables us to do two things at the same time: Create a corresponding story in moving and still image - to tell a more complex story in both mediums.

The following short project illustrates this process and serves as an overview and inspiration of the possibilities. We would love to use this workflow for a project with "Labatut", in our belief, the real moments and sensuality achieved with this method would fit the brand and really underline the natural beauty and aesthetic you have created.
